NSA Evesdropping

Attorney General Gonzales had to defend the administrations use of evesdropping to keep one step ahead of terrorists. Members of the Senate Intelligence Committee urged him to seek a change in the law to make this practice legal despite ample evidence that it is already legal. What I find of interest is the suggestion by Senators to change the law. Is this the same Senate that wouldn't agree to renew the Patriot Act? Who in their right mind would believe that any effort to change the law regarding this necessary evesdropping would be successful?
